June2012When people begin to consider the need for a preparedness plan, food storage is usually on the top of their list.  Obviously, food is a necessity of life so people naturally look for solutions to their food needs in a crisis situation.

While there is certainly a need for food storage in a preparedness plan, storing food is not necessarily the total solution to the family sustenance needs.  An effective and long-term food strategy should be considered.

Growing food is a great solution for long-term planning, however, there may be restrictions with some families due to land, equipment, and perhaps climate.  There are other potentials such as community gardens, alternative growing methods, etc., that may allow for food production regardless of the spacing limitations.  In this issue, we discuss some alternative growing methods.

It is also prudent to be prepared and to have skills in place for emergency food solutions.  Finding Food in the Wilderness, trapping food for survival, and harvesting food from consumable plants around town, might be solutions.  Our experts discuss steps and strategies to prepare for finding food in emergency situations.

The bottom line is, food storage and production are vital elements of any preparedness plan.  Start now considering the needs of your family, and begin developing an overall strategy that will insure you have a long-term food solution in place.
